Despite a storm bringing sleet and snow to the DFW area, the Texas power grid remained stable on Thursday, with ample reserve power available. However, experts warn that a significantly colder storm could still lead to blackouts.

Since a massive winter storm crippled much of Texas' power grid in 2021, winter weather has often sparked concerns about the state's energy infrastructure. However, during a storm that blanketed the DFW area with sleet and snow, the grid remained robust on Thursday, boasting ample reserve power over 12 hours into the event.

ERCOT's grid condition tracker displayed approximately 10,000 megawatts of reserve power throughout the afternoon, indicating a significant surplus capacity to meet demand despite the frigid temperatures. Any localized power outages experienced would stem from local issues, such as ice accumulation on power lines, rather than problems with the statewide grid. \Oncor, the Dallas-based company responsible for operating transmission lines in most of the DFW area, reported a minimal number of outages on Thursday afternoon, affecting only about 600-2,000 customers at any given time out of its over 4 million customer base. In the days preceding the snow and sleet, ERCOT projected that statewide grid conditions would remain stable. The current cold snap hitting the state this week is significantly milder than Winter Storm Uri, the 2021 storm that brought sub-zero temperatures and wreaked havoc on power plants. \While the current situation appears manageable, analysts closely monitoring the grid emphasize that Texas remains vulnerable to rolling blackouts if a significantly colder and more intense storm similar to the 2021 event were to materialize. 'As the population and energy demand have grown, if we were to have those weather conditions of 2021 again, we would have even more demand than we did then. And back then, the grid came one-third short of having enough power to go around. So, that's a huge margin that really no state had seen before,' explained Daniel Cohan, an energy researcher at Rice University. A report released in November stated that Texas continues to face an elevated risk of power shortfalls during extreme weather events. This report highlights that despite the addition of more wind, solar, and traditional power plants, electricity demand continues to rise. \In June, ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas informed state lawmakers that the grid's capacity would need to increase dramatically over the next five years to keep pace with the state's growth. When contacted by ERCOT on Thursday, an agency spokesperson stated that '...continues to work with the Texas legislature, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and stakeholders in building a more resilient grid for the ongoing economic and population growth across the state.' Texas lawmakers are anticipated to address this issue once again as the next legislative session commences later this month. Meanwhile, ERCOT has been diligently inspecting power plants to ensure their readiness for the cold. Data obtained by this week reveals that ERCOT conducted about 150 power generator inspections in December, with another 300 winter inspections planned for January-February. These inspections and the regulations mandating power companies to prepare for winter weather were strengthened in the aftermath of the 2021 storm
