QB competition between Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers tops the list but Longhorns have other...
AUSTIN – Texas football opens preseason practice Wednesday afternoon. Here are five things to watch as coach Steve Sarkisian heads into Year 2 with the Longhorns. The question had to be asked. But no, Sarkisian didn’t elect to name a starting quarterback during Tuesday’s press conference at Royal-Memorial Stadium.and redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers,
Sarkisian has been carefully monitoring Card’s comfort level in his second year within the system. And whether having a firmer grasp of the offense, the play calls and the thought process of Sarkisian and offensive coordinator Kyle Flood translates to better on-field composure and leadership. Sarkisian isn’t expected to name a starter this week. But in the meantime, he’s “excited for both these guys.”With an abundance of self-awareness, defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski provided the most comical moment of Tuesday’s press conferences when answering a question about Texas’ toothless pass rush.It was a cheeky moment from the soft-spoken West Coast import. It was also the truth.
“We got to be better coordinated,” Kwiatkowski said. “We gotta get off on the ball better. We gotta be relentless. And then we got to do a better job of defeating hands and pushing the pocket and collapsing the pocket with inside and outside guys.”Special teams coordinator Jeff Banks can’t recall a time where he’s ever had to replace so much lost production.
