The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has paid $43 million to buy 3,073 acres to expand Enchanted Rock State Natural Area . The state agency announced the purchase Monday, after the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission voted in November to authorize the acquisition. The department purchased 630 acres to expand the state park last year, bringing its size to about 2,300 acres. The new purchase will more than double the total acreage.

To save water, Hill Country state park closing bathrooms “Previously, the property was mainly used privately for hunting but will now become an extension of Enchanted Rock, allowing for more recreation and conservation opportunities for the citizens of Texas,” the agency said in a news release. The land includes a rock formation “that could provide a new scenic vantage point of the iconic pink granite dome the park is named for,” as well as protecting the dark skies and views, the agency said.

Hill Country may reap benefits as Texas grows state parks system The new purchase was one of five approved by the commission in November. The agency is also pursuing 1,700 acres in Uvalde County near Garner State Park, 823 acres in Bexar and Medina counties to expand Government Canyon State Natural Area.
