Outside the Texas State Capitol. Just hours after Governor Greg Abbott said he felt confident lawmakers were "on track" to pass a sweeping education package, a late-evening session in the Texas House ended with no action on education - putting those goals in jeopardy.Time is ticking on Texas' third special session with only six days left.
"There seems to be a kind of desperation effort to make sure he can pass this before the session ends.” Texas Southern University Professor of Political Science Dr. Michael Adams said."We’re awaiting senate action on the bills the House has already passed," Phelan said. "The Senate is scheduled to meet Sunday to take floor action on those bills.”Adams says this leaves these discussions in a tight spot.
With recent concessions from the Governor regarding the education agenda and insistence on getting something related to school choice passed, he believes the governor has enough political will and experience to still get something passed. If not, though Governor Abbott indicated he would prefer not to call another special session, Dr. Adams believes that would be a very real possibility.
