Texas will experience an extended period of below-average temperatures next week, bringing a chance of wintry precipitation. While the cold will be noticeable, it's expected to be significantly milder than the historic February 2021 freeze.

The coldest air of the winter so far will arrive in Texas next week, and it’s not going to be a quick one- or two-day cold weather event, either. Instead, temperatures will stay well below average all week long, and parts of the state could even experience some wintry precipitation. Let’s be clear, though. This upcoming winter weather event will not be like the historic February 2021 freeze. Almost four years ago, Texas was stuck in the deep freezer.

By the late afternoon, skies will clear a bit, leading to temps rising into the low 70s, about 10 degrees above average for early January. Evening temperatures will stay mild, slowly falling into the upper 60s after 7 p.m. Cold front arrives Sunday will start quite mild, with morning temperatures in the lower to mid-60s. Temps will likely rise to the mid-70s by noon on Sunday before the cold front makes its presence known during the afternoon. San Antonio will see temps drop to the 50s by 6 p.m.
