Two reeling programs meet Saturday night at Auburn when Texas A&M pays a visit looking to avoid its first six-game losing streak in 50 years.
The Aggies figured they’d finally found their quarterback of the future and now in freshman Conner Weigman, a former five-star prospect out of Bridgeland, all the way until he had the flu last week, according to Fisher.
Weigman was impressive the week prior in the Aggies’ 31-28 home loss to Mississippi, throwing for 338 yards and four touchdowns. Alas, he was not available in a 41-24 home loss to Florida a week ago because of the flu bug making its rounds, and backup Haynes King struggled in the second half, when A&M did not score a point.
Fisher said to expect Weigman back in action against the Tigers. Who knows at this point of a season teetering on oblivion — and Aggies will believe it when they see it based on his absence last week.A&M continues loitering among the nation’s worst at slowing the run under first-year defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, as the Aggies rank 124th out of 131 Football Bowl Subdivisions in allowing 215 rushing yards per game.
A&M has allowed 681 yards on the ground in its last two games against Mississippi and Florida, and will face another ground-centric attack on Saturday in the Tigers. Auburn’s Robby Ashford ranks second in the SEC among quarterbacks and 14th overall with 505 rushing yards, and running back Tank Bigsby is always a threat. His name is Tank, for crying out loud .
