Auburn will have a new kicker for its primetime matchup against Texas A&M. Freshman Alex McPherson was a standout at Fort Payne, where he broke the record for longest field goal in Alabama high school history.
It is unclear how long Carlson could be sidelined, but at least for Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. matchup with Texas A&M, it’ll be McPherson’s time in the spotlight for Auburn’s special teams unit.
McPherson was rated as the nation’s top kicker in the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He was a standout at Fort Payne, where he broke the state record for longest field goal in Alabama high school history -- a 61-yarder against North Jackson. He also won the Kohl’s kicking national field goal competition and underclassman challenge and was an Under Armour All-American.
“A lot of talent,” Carlson said of McPherson during fall camp. “Athletic kicker. We’re very different in our kicking styles, I would say, if you haven’t seen it. But, man, that guy, his talent is through the roof. He’s gonna have a great career here.... if y’all know Justin Tucker in the league, I compare him to that. Athletic. His technique’s just not as straight. There’s a lot of lean-off. So it’s cool to see a different style like that.
He will take over for Carlson, who has had an up-and-down season after returning from an ACL tear he sustained last November. Carlson has connected on 12-of-17 field goal attempts this season and is 22-of-22 on extra-point tries. Among his missed field goals are a go-ahead attempt in overtime last week against Mississippi State. His average distance on kickoffs is also down nearly 5 yards from his averages in previous seasons.
