The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE450e finally brings plug-in-hybrid power to the U.S. GLE lineup, after being offered in Europe for a couple of years.
UPDATE: This review has been updated with instrumented test results.Mercedes-Benz has been preoccupied with high-profile EV introductions and shuffling the attendant corporate EV-nomenclature strategy for the future. But while the automaker's agenda to become an EV-only concern by 2030 continues to dominate headlines, it quietly slipped the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class 450e plug-in hybrid into its U.S. mid-size SUV lineup for 2024 with little fanfare.
Over the course of 200 miles of highway, we managed 64 MPGe, 6 MPGe better than the feds mustered. All the fundamental GLE driving dynamics remain: It feels smaller and more agile at the helm than its 5940-pound curb weight suggests—we recorded a skidpad run of 0.82 g—and the ride is cushy. When it comes to an ideal ride quality, make sure you skip the optional 21-inch AMG wheels as they ensure that significant road imperfections do not pass unnoticed.
