A first drive review of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E450 4Matic luxury sedan. The latest E-Class is the best generation yet, and deserves more appreciation than sales might suggest.
In the year 2014, Mercedes sold 67,751 E-Class coupes, sedans and wagons in the United States. Last year, only 17,075 new E-Classes were delivered to buyers — and that includes a few thousand CLS-Class squash-roof four-doors, whose platform-related sales Mercedes doesn’t bother breaking out separately. Benz’s former brot-und-butter model is now outsold more than three-to-one by its suburban schlepper SUV sibling, the GLE-Class.The all-new 2024 E-Class four-door deserves better.
That’s solid economy for a feature-larded AWD sedan that’s gained up to 170 pounds, at 4,189 pounds for the E350 and 4,376 pounds for an E450. With each generation, this once-a-creampuff has steadily stiffened its interior fillings, inspired by both AMG doppelgangers and stiff competition from BMW et al. If the E-Class isn’t a sport sedan, it’s sport-adjacent, with multi-link front and rear suspension, standard adaptive dampers, robust steering and more grip than you’d imagine.
