A new study published in Nature suggests that Tesla's Supercharger network, if made universally accessible, could significantly reduce the number of fast-charging stations needed and save millions in federal funding for EV charging infrastructure.
A new study published in the academic journal Nature, first reported by Axios, highlights the significant gaps in America's public charging infrastructure, particularly in rural areas and non-coastal states. While the electric vehicle (EV) charging network is expanding, 'charging deserts' persist, making road trips in an EV challenging.
The study suggests that Tesla, with its extensive and reliable Supercharger network, can play a crucial role in bridging this gap and saving millions in federal funding. \The study proposes that if Tesla opens its Supercharger network to all EVs, using Magic Docks that accommodate both Tesla's proprietary NACS connector and the more common CCS standard, it could significantly reduce the number of fast-charging stations required to provide nationwide coverage. This universal access could save the federal government between $166 million and $332 million in funding allocated to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. \Tesla has already taken steps towards this goal, allowing some non-Tesla EVs to access its Supercharger network using adapters. It has also begun installing Magic Dock stations, equipped with CCS-to-NACS adapters and long cables to reach non-Tesla charging ports. Widespread adoption of these stations would be a major advancement in making EV charging more accessible. The NEVI program, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to build a reliable fast-charging network along key highway corridors, ensuring that chargers are available every 50 miles. Despite bureaucratic hurdles and permitting delays, the program is making progress, with states receiving funding and awarding contracts for station construction. However, President Trump's recent executive order freezing unallocated NEVI funds has created uncertainty and prompted some states to pause their programs. \If the NEVI program proceeds as planned, it will significantly improve the charging landscape in the U.S. by the end of the decade. The study uses a metric called 'consecutive coverage' to assess the availability of charging stations along National Highway System (NHS) roads. Under the NEVI program, states like California, Nevada, Arizona, and those in the Northeast could achieve coverage exceeding 95%. Nationally, charging station coverage would increase by 20% to 94% compared to current levels. While NEVI is a crucial step, a continued public-private partnership is essential to fully address America's EV charging challenges. Only through sustained collaboration and infrastructure development can we hope to make finding a fast, reliable charger as easy as stopping at a gas station
