A new study suggests that replacing margarine with olive oil could significantly reduce the risk of dying from dementia.
As dementia rates climb globally, finding ways to protect our brain health becomes increasingly crucial. New research presented at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting in Boston suggests a simple dietary change could significantly reduce the risk of dementia-related death.
The study, involving 90,000 medical professionals across two long-term health and lifestyle studies spanning nearly 30 years, found that participants who regularly consumed olive oil (over half a tablespoon per day) had a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia compared to those who rarely used it. This link remained consistent regardless of overall dietary choices, indicating that replacing other oils like margarine or mayonnaise with olive oil could offer brain-protective benefits. Replacing just one teaspoon of margarine or mayonnaise with olive oil daily was estimated to lower the risk of dementia death by 8 to 14%, according to researchers. This isn't the first time olive oil has been linked to cognitive benefits. A 2022 study published in Nutrients found that people with mild cognitive impairment who consumed 30 mL of extra-virgin olive oil daily for six months showed significant improvements in behavioral and clinical dementia rating scores. Researchers also discovered that the extra-virgin olive oil enhanced blood-brain barrier function, which is known to be compromised in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Other studies suggest olive oil may reduce the buildup of amyloid plaques, another factor associated with Alzheimer's. While this study demonstrates a correlation and further research is needed, the findings add to the growing body of evidence supporting the benefits of olive oil. Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, blood pressure-lowering effects, and long-standing role in the Mediterranean diet, olive oil appears to be a valuable ally in promoting brain health and longevity.
