The crash involved a Tennessee Department of Transportation dump truck, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, and a school bus
The crash, which involved a Tennessee Department of Transportation dump truck, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, and a school bus, occurred around noon on Highway 70 in Carroll County, Major Travis Plotzer, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Highway Patrol, told the Associated Press.
reached out to the Tennessee Department of Safety, Tennessee Highway Safety Office, and Tennessee Highway Patrol outside of normal business hours by email on Friday for comment.School bus crashes remain relatively rare but can have severe consequences when they occur, particularly during field trips or highway travel. These incidents highlight how school bus fatalities often result from multi‑vehicle crashes rather than bus mechanical failure alone. Most deaths in school‑transportation‑related crashes are not the students on the buses themselves, but occupants of other vehicles involved in the collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, between 2014 and 2023, there were 971 fatal school‑transportation‑related crashes that killed 1,079 people, with roughly 70 percent of those killed traveling in other vehicles.Plotzer said there were 25 students and five adults on the bus, which was transporting students and staff from Kenwood Middle School in Clarksville to Jackson, Tennessee, for a field trip. The Clarksville‑Montgomery County School System confirmed the trip in a statement. A parent told outlet WSMV4 that the students were traveling to Jackson to attend a GreenpowerUSA event. During a news conference, Plotzer said two students died as a result of the crash. At least seven other people were injured and transported by air ambulance to hospitals in Tennessee, officials said. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville and were listed in stable condition, according to a Vanderbilt Health spokesperson. Authorities said it was not immediately clear whether additional injured people were taken to hospitals by ground ambulance."I ask you to keep the first responders in your prayers because they witnessed some stuff today that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives, and some things that they’ll carry with them.”"I am deeply heartbroken by the tragic crash in Carroll County ... As a father and as someone who calls this community home, it is difficult to put into words the grief so many are feeling right now. My prayers are with every student, parent, teacher, and first responder affected by this devastating accident. During this time of sorrow, I encourage our community to come together in support of these families and to lift them up in every way we can. I am in close contact with local and state officials and stand ready to help ensure that all necessary resources are available in the days ahead.”"There are people in our community experiencing the worst day of their lives right now, and we should wrap them in love as they navigate this. “And I’ll say this as a middle school teacher, even if your child wasn’t involved, take a minute to check in with them tonight. News like this spreads fast, and it can affect kids in ways we don’t always see.”Update 3/27/26, 7:17 p.m. ET: This article has been updated with additional information.
