A recent Pew Research Center survey reveals a dramatic increase in teenagers using ChatGPT for homework, with Black and Hispanic teens leading the trend. While teens largely accept its use for research, concerns remain about its ethical implications in completing assignments and essays.
The number of teenagers using ChatGPT for homework assistance has more than doubled in the past year, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center. The survey, which focused on teenagers aged 13 to 17, revealed a growing familiarity and comfort with the technology among students. A significant 26% of teens reported using the AI chatbot to complete their schoolwork in 2024, a stark increase from the 13% recorded in 2023.
This trend highlights a shift in attitudes towards utilizing AI for academic purposes. Notably, there has been a surge in the adoption of ChatGPT by Black and Hispanic teenagers for school-related tasks. In 2023, 13% of Black and 11% of Hispanic teens admitted to using the chatbot for academic purposes. This figure jumped to a striking 31% in 2024. In comparison, white teenagers remain less inclined to rely on ChatGPT for homework, with only 22% reporting its use in 2024, although this represents an increase from the previous year. Older teenagers are also embracing technology to enhance their homework assistance, aligning with the broader trend. While the majority of teens (54%) believe it is acceptable to use ChatGPT for researching new topics, they are less supportive of using it for more complex tasks or to complete assignments. There is a divided opinion on using ChatGPT for solving math problems, with 29% finding it acceptable and 28% disagreeing. Most teens believe it is inappropriate to rely on the program to write an essay, with 18% considering it acceptable and 42% deeming it unacceptable. This evolving landscape underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the ethical implications of using AI tools, a conversation that continues to adapt alongside technological advancements
