New information on Erik Cantu, the teen shot and injured by a San Antonio police officer.
SAN ANTONIO - He was facing his own legal troubles, accused of fleeing from police on two occasions.
Cantu has been granted probation on those evading arrest cases. He was given seven years deferred adjudication, a specific type of probation where once it’s successfully completed, the case is dismissed. He was also given 200 hours of community service. We're told the community service will be waived if Cantu goes to college at least six hours a semester and then a parenting class.Erik Cantu pleaded no contest to two charges of evading arrest with a vehicle.
As part of the plea, Cantu’s driver’s license has been suspended for two years and he’ll have to take random drug tests. He also must pay restitution to Taylor Johnson. Her car was hit while Cantu was trying to evade arrest at Walmart. He is also ordered to have no contact with Walmart.Former SAPD Officer James Brennand will go on trial on Friday, September 13. Brennand is accused of shooting Cantu multiple times in a McDonald's parking lot back in 2022.
