A 17-year-old driver died in a fiery crash early Monday morning after losing control and striking the center barrier of Interstate 80 in Richmond, California. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

RICHMOND — A driver died in a fiery crash early Monday after losing control and striking the center barrier of a freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.17-year-old boy dead in East Bay crash

The crash happened about 2 a.m. on westbound Interstate 80, just east of the Carlson Boulevard exit, CHP spokesperson Officer Adib Zeid said. The driver died at the scene. Authorities did not identify the driver immediately pending confirmation of their identity and notification of next of kin. According to Zeid, the car lost control for some reason and struck the barrier that separates the eastbound and westbound directions of the freeway. The car then hit other objects near the barrier and became engulfed in flames, Zeid said.The CHP is investigating why the driver lost control but did not have any theories early Monday. The agency closed all but the far left lane on I-80 until 4:30 a.m.
