An investigation into The Gathering Place found that the school hired special education teachers and paraprofessionals without required certifications.

A San Antonio charter school broke state law by hiring special education teachers and paraprofessionals who didn’t have the required certifications, a recent state probe concluded. But the Texas Education Agency ’s investigation of The Gathering Place found that an accusation by the school’s co-founder and former CEO Ryan York — that the school had confined students as young as 5 in closets as a disciplinary measure — was unsubstantiated.

Facing teacher shortage, San Antonio school districts get creative. Is it working? The Gathering Place has a single campus that currently enrolls 460 students. The agency has issued a corrective action plan requiring its staff to meet with every student with an IEP to determine if they require compensatory services “to address the absence of special education instruction from certified personnel,” the investigative report says.

Texas State Board of Education OKs 4 new charter schools while noting opening delays In his complaint, he accused the school of repeatedly locking or restraining children in “restorative rooms” — closets smaller than 50 square feet with hard concrete floors and non-padded walls — as a de-escalation method. “In some instances, a staff member would remain inside the closet with the child,” he wrote.
