TSCO deputies pursued the speeding truck through several towns and counties, eventually arresting two people in connection to a suspected organized retail theft scheme. A suspected organized retail theft spree that started in Lewis County ended with two people in custody after deputies pursued a fleeing truck through Olympia and Lacey, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said it received information on Sunday that two organized retail theft suspects were heading north on Interstate 5 into Thurston County from Lewis County after going on a theft spree using stolen bags from one store to steal merchandise from another. The pair was also involved in a theft in Lacey three days earlier, but they were not caught, the sheriff’s office said. A deputy spotted the truck on I-5 in Olympia, the sheriff’s office said. Before the deputy activated emergency lights, the truck fled, and a pursuit began. The pursuit was quickly terminated after an unsuccessful PIT attempt as the truck drove into downtown Olympia at high speeds. A few minutes later, deputies located the truck leaving downtown and started another pursuit. The truck “began blowing through intersections heading into Lacey at high speeds,” and deputies terminated the pursuit again because of what the sheriff’s office described as “extremely reckless behavior of the fleeing driver.” A short time later, deputies found the truck abandoned near College Street. During a K-9 track, the sheriff’s office said it located the two suspects walking through a nearby neighborhood and took both into custody at gunpoint. The sheriff’s office said the female suspect was turned over to Centralia police for organized retail theft. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the truck and found thousands of dollars of stolen merchandise from numerous businesses inside. Deputies also recovered meth, heroin, and fentanyl. The sheriff’s office said the driver had a custom "bong device" built into the dash of the truck so he could "comfortably smoke drugs while driving." A search warrant was also obtained for the driver’s blood for DUI prosecution. The TCSO said the driver is a four-time convicted felon for numerous thefts, has 27 misdemeanor convictions, and 97 prior arrests. As of Sunday night, he was back in jail for the 98th time on suspicion of DUI, eluding, and possession of narcotics.Once he is released from the Thurston County Jail, the sheriff’s office said he is expected to face organized retail theft charges in Lewis County.
