Subscribers to Netflix's ad-supported tier will find that they aren't able to access as many as 135 titles this month. Among those titles is the acclaimed Western thriller Wind River, written and directed by Taylor Sheridan.
Released in 2017, a year before Sheridan announced himself as a major force in the television industry with Yellowstone, the movie featured two Marvel Cinematic Universe stars — Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Sheridan would go on to work with Renner on the hit series Mayor of Kingstown, one of the several shows that he helped create for Paramount+ as part of his overall deal. Sheridan controversially severed ties with Paramount recently, after the studio underwent a behind-the-scenes shake-up in management and ownership. Wind River was released after Sheridan had already begun garnering acclaim for his screenplay for Denis Villeneuve's Sicario, which he followed up with an Oscar-nominated script for David Mackenzie's Hell or High Water. Wind River marked his second feature film as director — he debuted with the generally forgotten horror movie Vile — and earned excellent reviews. The movie is now sitting at a"certified fresh" 87% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads,"Wind River lures viewers into a character-driven mystery with smart writing, a strong cast, and a skillfully rendered setting that delivers the bitter chill promised by its title." The movie grossed $45 million worldwide against a reported budget of $11 million. Taylor Sheridan's Deal With Paramount Ends Soon Combining aspects of the murder mystery genre, the icy Western was acclaimed for Sheridan's writing and direction, and its haunting cinematography by Ben Richardson. The two would go on to work together on Yellowstone, which has inspired several spin-offs. Sheridan has also delivered massive hits, such as Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, Landman, and Tulsa King. He recently struck a deal with NBCUniversal to produce original content. Renner went on to headline not only Mayor of Kingstown, but also a Hawkeye series for Disney+. Olsen played a major role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, while Sheridan's last feature film as writer and director was the Angelina Jolie vehicle Those Who Wish Me Dead.
