Taxes will start falling if public services become more effective, Jeremy Hunt has promised in a hint he will start cutting the tax burden as soon as possible.
Rishi Sunak is under pressure to speed up the delivery of key Conservative policies in order to show he is moving past theHe is planning announcements on the NHS and is also working with the Chancellor for ideas on how to cut taxes without driving up borrowing. Within the Government, ministers are urging Mr Sunak and Mr Hunt to restrain public spending after several years in which spending rose but: “We’ve poured more and more money into the NHS and its productivity has just got worse. It’s not about austerity, because the NHS has been protected from austerity since 2010.”
In a speech to the Centre for Policy Studies, the Chancellor warned that all major economies were being hit by a long-term slowdown in growth and vowed to investigate ways toHe said on Monday evening: “Growth is critical for many reasons. It is the way we increase people’s living standards. It is the way we increase opportunity with high-wage, high-skilled jobs based on the innovation that will define this century.
