When looking at the tape一 something both Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus have hammered home as the meat and potatoes of their evaluation process一 they’ll see a player who’s a dynamic playmaker. They’ll see a player who demands the attention of the defense when he’s on the field. But they’ll also see that Cohen hasn’t been on the field since September 2020.
Cohen tore his ACL in Week 3 of that season, and the injury kept him out of the entire 2021 season as well. So how do you evaluate a player who hasn’t played in nearly a year and a half? “It just comes down to that communication, and conversations with Andre Tucker, you know, one of the best in the league,” Poles said on Tuesday. “We're just going to have those conversations and see where everything stands and make the best decision we can make at the time.”
The decision becomes a bit tougher since Cohen is set to have the eighth-highest salary cap hit on the team, at $5.75 million according to Spotrac. The Bears also seem to have found a one-two punch at running back with David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert. The midseason acquisition of Jakeem Grant gave the offense a spark it was missing with Cohen sidelined, too.
So do the Bears cut ties and try to find that spark elsewhere, again? If Poles goes that route and designates Cohen as one of the team’s two post-June 1 cuts, the Bears would save $4 million towards this year’s cap, according to Spotrac.
