, I am wondering why it is not hibernating. Don’t the bears in California hibernate in the winter? I’d never thought about this before.I think most of us have been educated by cartoon bears that tuck themselves into caves and snooze their way through winter, unless a rascally rabbit wakes them up.
Hibernation is dictated mostly by the availability of food. In the colder areas, where food can be scarce, bears can hibernate for up to seven months to conserve energy until food is abundant again. In warmer areas and for bears that eat a lot of human food, as Hank and two other bears implicated in the Tahoe forays do, hibernation can be delayed for months and last only a short while.
