GEORGE TOWN: Imagine the sight of a fireman doing his daily rounds on the humble bicycle.

“Back in colonial days, firefighters had to cycle around town to check on the condition of fire hydrants,” said Central Fire Station 1908 acting chief Saipul Bahari Abdul Kader.

“Besides displaying vintage items, the 114-year-old fire station also offers an interactive experience for the public to discover its daily operations, and the role of a firefighter,” he said.Saipul said 19 auxiliary firemen from the station were killed in a bomb raid during World War II. The new sign also reads “Central Fire Station 1908”, written in a large, black lettering, replacing the previous red signboard.
