GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained six people during inspections of two local fishing boats at 9.43am and 5pm on Tuesday (Jan 3).

Penang MMEA director Maritime Capt Abd Razak Mohamed said two fishing boats were inspected while MMEA carried out their Op Pertiwi and Op Tanjung patrols.

“The boat was operated by four men from Myanmar aged 35 to 40. Three of them did not have any valid identification documents while the other person is believed to have a dubious identification document," said Abd Razak. "They do not have a permit to employ foreigners from the Fisheries Malaysia director-general and do not have any valid personal travel document,” he said in a statement on Wednesday .

“Both boats and all the crew were detained along with their catch and have been taken to the Batu Uban marine police jetty and Limbongan Batu Maung jetty to be handed over to the MMEA investigation officer for further investigation,” he said.
