The Joint Investigative Team, made up of the National Women’s Soccer League and the NWSL’s Players Association, released its report on Wednesday afternoon.
The sunlight, and its impact on the words and actions that followed from key stakeholders, is stark.
While the sins of past league offices cannot and should not be laid at the feet of the current leadership — indeed, Jessica Berman’sof labor relations has helped turn the partnership with the NWSLPA into one that has strengthened the league — getting the level of transparency gleaned in the report is virtually unimaginable under previous commissioners, including Lisa Baird, who was forced to resign over that very issue.
“The NWSL should consider avenues to create a formal partnership with the Black Women’s Player Collective to hear and address the Collective’s concerns and improve the NWSL experience for Black players. The NWSL should consider working with the NWSLPA to establish additional affinity groups, and develop similar partnerships with those affinity groups to improve the NWSL experience for all players.
