Mayor Sylvester Turner announced plans that are a big step forward to address long-neglected drainage ditches in Houston neighborhoods, writes the Editorial Board.
Pollution clogging flood drains is one of many issues the residents of Settegast, a historically black neighborhood, face on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023, in Houston. Settegast has the lowest life expectancy in all of Harris County, which has prompted the County Health Department, Urban Land Institute and Kinder to work with residents to address the most pressing concerns.
Every time it rains in Northeast Houston, Kourtney Revels can only think of reaching her daughter's elementary school. Will the streets in Settegast become impassable? Will the drainage ditch outside the school become a chasm brimming with floodwater? Will it leave her daughter stranded in the building?and having these thoughts and memories from Allison," Revels told the editorial board this week."We haven’t seen much done as far as improving the drainage.
"They're doing like half the street and then the other half of the street still needs work," Revels said,"but I have seen some things start to finally change in the last three or four months."
