Political and religious leaders have called for calm after a shock stabbing in a Sydney church has put some communities on edge for reprisals.
Islamic leaders “unequivocally condemned” the stabbing of an Assyrian orthodox bishop in Sydney’s west that was livestreamed to church followers and drew out a violent mob who pelted police officers with rocks and other projectiles.
The Australian National Imams Council “unequivocally condemned” the attack and urged the community to stay calm. “These attacks are horrifying and have no place in Australia, particularly at places of worship and toward religious leaders,” the council said in a statement.NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb hit out at the violent mob of hundreds of people that formed outside the church on Monday night.
“You want me to deny all of this and believe in someone who came six centuries later?” the bishop says in one sermon exploring the difference between Islam and Christianity. “Did you know the Quran was written 200 years after Muhammad? I’m not attacking, I’m just quoting what they say.”Later in the sermon, the bishop delivers a critique of a widely held belief that a Quranic figure, Isa, is Jesus.“Don’t tell me he is a prophet.
“And I’m not judging, I love the LGBT people. I will always pray for them, but I will never, ever bless their lifestyle … to choose to live in that life willingly, as if it is normal, and you expect the church leader to bless you? Lord have mercy.”
