Luigi Mangione, accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealth Group CEO Brian Thompson in a brazen New York City hit, pleaded not guilty to state charges, including 'terrorist' murder. The 26-year-old suspect appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday, flanked by court officers and escorted by a procession of law enforcement personnel. He was in handcuffs and shackles, wearing a burgundy sweater over a white-collared shirt.
During his brief arraignment hearing before Judge Gregory Carro, Mangione stated 'not guilty' to the 11-count indictment charging him with murder as an act of terrorism and weapons offenses. Mangione faces charges in both state and federal court for the December 4th shooting. After the 30-minute hearing, officers led Mangione out of the courtroom, shackled once again, and he is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Thompson's murder ignited public frustration with the US commercial healthcare system, with many social media users portraying Mangione as a hero. This public sentiment and statements from officials may jeopardize Mangione's ability to receive a fair trial, his lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo argued during the hearing. 'They are treating him like he is some sort of political fodder, some sort of spectacle,' Agnifilo said. 'He is not a symbol, he is someone who is afforded a right to a fair trial.'
