ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A man is dead after an early-morning standoff with Anchorage police, according to Chief Sean Case — one in which officers say he fired a high-powered rifle, tried to shoot down a police drone, and set the home he was in on fire.

Dispatchers, according to Case, received four calls reporting gunshots at 12011 Shore Circle in south Anchorage around 3:27 a.m. Saturday. Some neighbors reported they thought the suspect was moving outside and said they heard four to five shots, including one neighbor who said they thought their upper window had been shot out. Police say officers on scene believed they were being shot at, and the shooter may have been using a high-powered rifle, though the type of weapon has not been independently confirmed.Officers deployed an APD drone to help slow the situation down. Chief Case says they believe the suspect tried to shoot the drone out of the sky. The suspect, Case said, broke a window and shot at officers. A single officer — one of multiple on the scene — fired three to four rounds before seeing the man go down.Shortly after the shooting, the house erupted in flames. Case said police believe the suspect started the fire, though investigators have not released details on how. Because the fire was so large, Case said securing the scene remained a public safety threat. The chief said the fire was extinguished shortly before the 8:30 a.m. news conference. An Alaska’s News Source crew on scene about an hour later still observed smoke and multiple fire units. Neighbors who spoke with Alaska’s News Source talked with said gunshots woke them up to the scene Case described. Police have not confirmed the suspect’s cause of death. Case said while the officer observed the man go down after being shot, because the fire broke out immediately afterward, determining the exact cause of death remains part of the ongoing investigation. The suspect has not been identified. APD confirmed officers had previously responded to the address for calls for service but did not provide further details. Police believe only one person was inside the home. APD is expected to release more information at a follow-up news conference next week.Case said all officers on scene were wearing body cameras, and APD will review body camera footage, 911 calls, and radio communications as part of the investigation. Officer names will be released within 72 hours, per department policy. Officers involved in shootings are placed on four days of paid administrative leave. The investigation is ongoing.Information in this story is based on an initial Anchorage Police Department news conference. This is a developing story. Additional details, including the suspect’s identity and cause of death, are expected at a follow-up APD news conference next week. ‘Every fiber of me wishes I could change it all’: Veteran musher posts tribute to dog who died during IditarodFilmmaker Kevin Smith draws massive crowd at Anchorage meet-and-greet Anchorage-area Vietnamese parolee held 65 days after ICE check-in; officials say pending applications don’t protect immigrants Anchorage-area Vietnamese parolee held 65 days after ICE check-in; officials say pending applications don’t protect immigrants
