The NYPD is looking for a Manhattan rapist. Here is what we know so far.
The man who allegedly tried to rape a woman inside a midtown Manhattan nail salon was arrested and faces charges, according to police. Joseph Wichard was arrested Saturday in connection with the attack on a 34-year-old woman inside the nail salon near West 36th Street and Broadway on Sept.
1, police said. The man somehow got inside the business around 6 p.m. as the woman was cleaning up. It was not clear how the man was able to get into the building, which requires visitors to buzz in. In an exclusive interview with NBC New York and Telemundo 47, the victim said she was dragged into a room as the suspect fondled her, but she was able to fight back.The victim said she then grabbed the item closest to her, a vacuum, and started beating him with it. When she ran to an elevator to escape him, she says her attacker dragged her by the hair and ripped off her clothes. She screamed for help but no one was there to hear her.From Midtown to the Upper West Side to the Lower East Side and all points between, NBC New York covers Manhattan news, weather, traffic and more.Finally, the victim said she was able to whack her attacker hard enough with the vacuum to scare him away.Wichard was charged with attempted rape and sex abuse. Attorney information for the 35-year-old was not immediately available. While the NYPD has touted historic lows when it comes shootings, subway attacks and retail theft, rape incidents have been on the rise. Thus far in 2025, police have responded to more than 1,300 rape attacks across the five boroughs, up more than 23% from 2024.
