Last week, the Board of Supervisors voted to overhaul County Medical Services, the safety-net program for people who cannot afford insurance and do not qualify for Medi-Cal. With federal cuts threatening coverage, protecting our neighbors is both compassionate and responsible. Supervisors Terra Lawson-Remer and Monica Montgomery Steppe have taken an important first step to modernize and expand access to this lifesaving program. Continued community engagement will be essential as the county works to meet the needs of more than 300,000 San Diego County residents at risk of losing Medi-Cal. Many are immigrant neighbors, including refugees, asylees and domestic violence survivors, who could be pushed onto emergency-only coverage. When people lose insurance, they delay care until crises become emergencies, increasing ER use and hospital costs. San Diego is showing leadership.
