A Brazilian pediatric surgeon is using superhero costumes to help children feel more comfortable and brave during surgery.

A pediatric surgeon in Brazil is making surgery a little less scary for his young patients by dressing them up as superheroes. Dr. Leandro B. Guimarães, an otolaryngologist, says he uses playfulness to help children feel more comfortable in the operating room. In a video shared on Instagram, Guimarães' patients can be seen 'flying' over his shoulder or running with him into surgery, all while wearing superhero costumes.

Guimarães says the idea came from a desire to make the surgical room entrance less stressful. He recalls a two-year-old patient who was crying uncontrollably when brought into surgery. That day, he made a promise to himself to never let a child go into surgery crying again. Guimarães draws on his experience as a former hospital clown to help calm and distract his patients. He says he lets the children choose their favorite superhero costumes and explains that they'll be 'flying' or running during the procedure. He also encourages parents to come in with their children if they are still scared. After the surgery, Guimarães removes the costume and gives it to the parent as a keepsake. He also records the child's entrance and sends the video to the mother. Guimarães says many of his patients return to their follow-up appointments wearing their costumes, proudly showing that the experience was not traumatic. He adds that the positive experience can even lead some children to want to have surgery again in the future.
