Sunnyvale has a new plan for creating a mixed-use community on the 1,300 acres in the northern area of the city known as Moffett Park.
City Council adopted a new Moffett Park Specific Plan at its July 11 meeting to guide development over the next 20 years in the area, currently home to leading technology companies like Google. The plan allows for construction of up to 20,000 housing units, at least 15% of which must be affordable to low-income. City zoning does not currently allow housing in this area. The buildout of housing in Moffett Park would represent about 20% of future housing units in Sunnyvale.
The plan also includes an Ecological Combining District to expand and enhance emergent wetlands, and an innovation district to foster collaboration among leading technology companies, startups and research institutions. Sustainable design practices are called for, including energy-efficient buildings, green spaces, bike lanes, renovation and enhancement of natural landscapes, bird safe designs and improved public transportation options. Enhanced transportation infrastructure would include improved roadways, public transit systems and pedestrian-friendly pathways. Public spaces, such as parks, plazas and community gathering areas are also planned.
