'It shows quite clearly how far we still have to go as a country to eradicate transphobia and create a safe space for trans people to be themselves without prejudice.' I ✍️ Ugla Stefanía Kristjönudóttir Jónsdóttir
The news came just as LGBT+ activists celebrated a hard-won victory on conversion therapy
Sunak’s move is a bizarre and unprecedented attack on Scottish democracy and the rights of trans people. That it comes amid reports of a positive change on conversion therapy, proves for the Tories, it will always be one step forward and two steps back on LGBT+ rights. UK Government figures have claimed there were concerns about the ‘impact’ this would have on equalities legislation across the UK.supports HTML5 video
It was specifically stated that fraudulently getting one was a criminal offence, with penalties and imprisonment for up to two years. Holding the rights of trans people hostage over fears of what cisgender men might do is not only unfair, but illogical and based on harmful misconceptions and lack of recognition for trans people’s identities. It is frustrating that our government and policy makers are seemingly easily led astray by these misconceptions, as we have a right to expect them to consider evidence and make informed decisions based on the best available information and best practice.
