Visitors, including a very secure cat, waited for noon near the Gottlieb Transit Corridor at the Griffith Observatory on the first day of summer Wednesday, June 21. Summer Solstice was the longest day of sunlight in 2023. It was marked by the meridian arch at the observatory, which is an accurate outdoor astronomical instrument built below-grade on the west side of the observatory. Its form is like the instruments used in ancient temples and medieval churches.
