The Harris County Street Olympics Summer Games started up in the Fifth Ward Wednesday...

According to a Precinct One news release, about 2,000 Houston-area kids, ages 6-17, from around 50 youth-serving agencies were to participate throughout the summer in Street Olympics activities such as the Summer Games,In the statement, Harris County Precinct One commissioner Rodney Ellis said the Street Olympics represented the county's commitment to improving residents' quality of life by lifting up youth, regardless of family resources.

"As with all sports, the benefits run deeper than what you see on the field or on the court," Ellis said."This free program lays the groundwork for a healthy life. And that benefits not only the children but their families, neighborhoods and communities." In between morning activities, three children had the chance to help light the Olympic flame that will be extinguished at the Summer Games' closing ceremonies Aug. 4 at NRG Arena. Beyond the four activities demonstrated Wednesday, Summer Games activities include softball throw, kickball, a spelling bee, 50- and 100-yard dash, an art competition and chess.
