If it feels like everyone on the road is angry, you’re not wrong. A new study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found 96% of drivers admitted to driving aggressively in the past year—and most have also been victims.
Researchers say aggressive driving is contagious: the more drivers experience hostility, the more likely they are to respond in the same way. They found that cycle has created a culture where anger behind the wheel feels normal—and in some cases, turns violent. More than one in ten drivers admitted to actions such as confronting another driver and even bumping another car.92% reported risky behaviors like speeding or cutting off other drivers.Drivers in sports cars, big trucks, and motorcycles were often seen as more aggressive.AAA says courtesy and calm are the best defenses. “Not engaging with the other driver is key to keeping yourself and others safe,” said Kara Hitchens, AAA’s manager of Public and Government Affairs. “You never know how far someone is willing to go during one of these incidents and not engaging and staying away from them is your safest bet for avoiding trouble.”Stay Calm – Don’t engage, don’t make eye contact, don’t react.Protect Yourself – Call 911 or head to a public place if necessary. “Driving can be a stressful experience due to behaviors of others on the road and how you respond to various situations,” said Dr. David Yang, president and executive director of the AAA Foundation. “Road etiquette and manners can be a protective factor against aggressive driving.”
