The win was MKA's third over West Orange in the last two years, all of which have been shutouts.
Braeden Keegan of MKA moves the ball ahead of Dan Castro of Gill St. Bernard’s during the NJSIAA North, Non-Public B Final between Gill St. Bernard’s and Montclair Kimberley in Gladstone on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.Both on a corner kick early and the second half, but mainly throughout the game, the junior defender for Montclair Kimberley had a sense for how things would go against No. 12 West Orange.
As the game progressed, though, West Orange tipped its hand to the style it was going to try to play and MKA seemed ready for it. And while West Orange had a significant size advantage in some spots, MKA was able to capitalize where it could and battled for every 50/50 ball regardless of the situation.
“It’s hard to settle and play under that pressure at times when the ball’s getting smashed down your throat,” Leather said. “But they’re good at that and they play for second balls.” “A goal is a goal and whatever it is, however it’s scored, it goes on the scoreboard and it’s great for us,” Keegan said.
“We’re older so we’ve grown together, our chemistry’s better and we’re just always doing whatever we can to make the team better,” Keegan said. “We want to compete with anyone we can, we want to do the best we can and that’s the end goal. We just have to work up to that.”
