The Point Loma Nazarene University baseball team won the conference regular season and tourney titles and will host the NCAA Tournament West Regional
Point Loma Nazarene University’s baseball team just became the first PacWest program ever to win multiple regular season and conference tournament titles, and they did it with a new level of dominance.
The Sea Lions finished a full 10 games ahead of their nearest competitor, then swept through the tournament winning every game by at least seven runs. Apparently hitting is not the only thing in baseball that’s contagious. So are pitching, defense, and winning.
“Oh yeah, momentum is everything in sports, especially in baseball,” says head coach Justin James. “When you're starting to feel good, everyone starts to feel good and they believe in themselves. We actually practice not playing well and still trying to figure it out. Some adversity in baseball will always happen.
But when it's going well it's pretty fun to be in the dugout. ” At 44-10 the Sea Lions have shown the ability to beat you in plenty of different ways. PLNU is the only team in the country that ranks in the top 20 in both runs scored and runs allowed. Very few good teams are not close teams, and the chemistry on this club is off the charts.
“It’s unbelievable. From the day we walked in it’s like we all just meshed right away, like someone just snapped their fingers” says sophomore infielder Josiah Rodriguez.
“It’s just so much fun, that energy is always up. It’s a great time. ”“It's ridiculous. I mean, we spend every second together and it's not just, you know, come to the field and people are getting at each other trying to win a spot.
It's a solid group of guys. We're eating every meal together. We're hanging out after practice. I mean, it’s really tight knit,” says Elliot.
PLNU is the number two seed in the NCAA West Regional, which they get to host at America’s Most Scenic Ballpark.
“Yeah, I played and graduated here, and I am fully convinced that this is the best place to watch college baseball in general, but especially in postseason play when this place is packed,” says James. “The vibe is really awesome. ” This is the third time in the program’s NCAA history that it’s won at least 40 games. The others were in 2022 and 2024.
Both years, they went to the College World Series. So, it’s not hard to guess what the ceiling for this club is.
“It's a World Series. There's no doubt about that,” says Elliot.
“You don't have to make it any more difficult than that. We can go win a World Series, for sure. ”
