The “Stranger Things“ creators confirm a new spinoff in the works that will answer a major finale question.

After a journey that took audiences on a strange trip to the Upside Down in 2016, “Stranger Things“ has finally ended in 2025. The series saw a group of kids battle monsters right out of a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, to battling an unseen threat known as the Mind Flayer, and of course, Vecna.

With the finale wrapped up, there are many questions and interpretations that are sure to come out regarding the ending. However, one thing has been officially confirmed by the creators, The Duffer Brothers. A day after the finale aired and was released in limited movie theaters, the brothers have confirmed a spinoff is already in the works. There have been spinoffs that exist in the world thus far, such as the upcoming animated “Stranger Things“ Tales from 85“ series that is set to release. But the Duffer Brothers confirmed their new spinoff will directly follow the finale. For those who have not watched the finale, do not continue reading, as this article will contain heavy spoilers for the season finale. STRANGER THINGS: SEASON 5. Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna in Stranger Things: Season 5. Cr. COURTESY OF NETFLIX © 2025 During the “Stranger Things“ finale, the origin of Vecna and Henry was finally revealed. During a moment in the second volume, where Holly stumbles on a memory involving a young Henry killing a man with a gun, it essentially explains how he came about his violent nature. What wasn't explained until the finale was what the man was holding in the briefcase that Henry opened. During the finale, that was finally revealed. A rock that contained the same fractured sort of ground as the upside-down went into Henry's bloodstream, creating his powers. That rock also seemingly contained the Mind Flayer, the big baddie from the first season of the series. What likely has fans confused has to do with the rock itself. Where did it come from? Who was the man holding it? Well, it appears that is what the Duffer Brothers will structure their new spinoff about. While speaking in an exclusive interview with Variety, the brothers revealed more about the rock and confirmed that they have been working on and will continue to work on a new story revolving around the origins of the rock and more “mythology“ for the “Stranger Things“ universe. When asked about what the rock represents in the finale, Matt Duffer explained the rock is “spinoff-y.“ “Spinoffy, yeah. You pinned us down. So annoying. I do want to explain, just because people’s expectations go in certain directions: The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it. But it’s a completely different mythology. So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining,“ Matt said. Matt also reveals that he and his brother, Ross, will get back to work on the new spinoff on Monday. Also, the new series will delve into a brand new town and more. “You don’t understand. My favorite part of the show is working on it. It’s not releasing it — that’s just stressful, no matter how it goes when you release it. It’s maybe my least favorite part of the process. I like the creative part. I like making it. So, we’re actually really excited, and it’s very exciting to work with a clean slate: completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology,“ Matt said. It will be interesting to see where the Duffer Brothers take this new story. There is a wealth of unanswered questions that were left in the wake of the finale that could come up in the new spinoff. Will that contain a definite answer about the fate of Eleven? That remains to be seen, but there is more “Stranger Things“ on the way. For more TV news, head to Newsweek TV.
