Eleven looking emotional in the series finale of Stranger Things
If you spent any time being chronically online during the Stranger Things Season 5 rollout, you probably saw it: posts insisting Netflix chopped out massive chunks of Volume 2 and the finale, threads dissecting episode runtimes down to the minute, and theories claiming there’s a secret, extended cut sitting in a vault somewhere.
According to the Duffer Brothers, though? None of that is real. Speaking to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer directly addressed the growing speculation that Season 5 had significant deleted scenes — and their answer couldn’t have been more definitive. “There were no deleted scenes,” Matt Duffer said. When pressed for clarification — “Nothing?” — the answer didn’t change. “No." That’s it. There are, in fact, no secret reels, no lost Hopper monologues, no missing Eleven scenes quietly scrubbed from existence, no Byler canon events, and what did happen is far more mundane — and honestly, very on-brand for a show this collaborative, as Matt Duffer explained: “I mean, the only thing that got trimmed down a little bit was the teens on the rooftop scene, because there was so much kind of improvising going on. It was one of my favorite scenes, but I think it was five minutes longer, so that got down. So there's an extended version of that.” Are There Any 'Stranger Things' Deleted Scenes? In other words: not a deleted scene, just a longer cut that needed tightening. What was ultimately a normal post-production decision somehow spiraled into a full-blown fandom conspiracy. Matt Duffer went even further, zooming out to the entire history of the show to put the rumors into perspective. He explained there's only ever been one deleted scene in the show's entire history. “But no, throughout the course of Stranger Things, there's been only one scene that's been deleted, all the way back in Season 1. Which was a scene Netflix had us write that we didn't want to write, so we just shot it and deleted it, and they forgot we shot it. It was kind of amazing.” That anecdote alone pretty much nukes the idea that Netflix was secretly forcing last-minute cuts in Season 5. A disaster for the tin foil hat bearers out there. If anything, it suggests the opposite: the Duffers have had a surprising amount of control over what makes it to screen. So why did the deleted-scenes theory get so much traction? A lot of it comes down to the same thing that fueled speculation about Eleven’s fate: intentional ambiguity. The finale leaves lots of emotional breathing room instead of spelling everything out, and for a fandom trained to expect answers, that absence started to feel like something was missing. Add in shifting runtime listings across platforms, and suddenly, the internet was convinced pieces of the puzzle had been quietly removed. But per the Duffers, what you see in Season 5 is what was always meant to be there. Subscribe for deeper Stranger Things insights Curious about the rumors?
