) - Hurricane Francine made landfall around 5 p.m. today in Terrebonne Parish, La., about 30 miles south-southwest of Morgan City, La.We expect the storm to weaken as it crosses into Mississippi overnight. Despite the expected weakening, our local area is still anticipating impacts. Tropical storm conditions, possible tornadoes, coastal flooding, and dangerous rip currents are all possible.The Storm Prediction Center has placed our area under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather.
Timing: The main window for potential tornadoes is from Wednesday evening through very early Thursday morning. Be aware that overnight warnings are possible, so stay alert.Heavy rainfall is expected, with coastal areas potentially receiving 4-7 inches and inland communities expecting 2-4 inches. Despite these high totals, our flooding potential is somewhat limited due to the recent dry period. Remember: Never drive on flooded roads.
Timing: Heavy rainfall will be possible overnight into Thursday morning, with clearing beginning in the pre-dawn hours. We expect rain to move out of our area rather quickly on Thursday morning.Tropical storm force winds are possible in our area as Francine approaches. Expect winds of 39-57 mph, especially at the coast and in the western half of the FOX10 viewing area. There’s limited potential for downed trees, branches, and power lines, particularly in our Mississippi counties.
Timing: Breezy conditions will begin midday Wednesday, with the highest winds arriving Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Winds will gradually diminish on Thursday. The core of tropical storm force wind gusts will move into our Mississippi counties after 7:00 PM, with the strongest winds at the coast. Overnight, tropical storm wind gusts of 39-57 mph will be possible area-wide.
