There were no watches or warnings in effect for Alabama on Tuesday, but coastal areas are expecting to see gusty winds, rough seas and a high risk of rip currents as the storm moves closer. Areas farther north in Alabama could get several inches of rain, and forecasters will be on the lookout for for tornadoes as rain bands move onshore and the storm moves inland on Wednesday and Thursday.
Francine had winds of 65 mph on Tuesday. It needs to reach 74 mph to become a Category 1 hurricane. Category 2 winds begin at 96 mph. The hurricane center’s forecast track suggests Francine will stay on a slow north-northwest path through the morning, then turn more to the northeast and pick up speed. It will move just offshore of the Mexico and south Texas coasts today and make landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday.* A Storm Surge Warning is in effect from High Island, Texas, to the mouth of the Mississippi River as well as Vermilion Bay.
