We’re learning that the alleged drunk driver, 56-year-old Marlon Daniels , has no prior convictions in Bexar County . But tonight, he’s behind bars after allegedly killing a mother and her 5-year-old son while allegedly drunk behind the wheel.

SAN ANTONIO- Daniels faces two counts of intoxication manslaughter. Some residents in the area say drunk drivers and speeders make them feel unsafe in the area. A downed stop sign and spray paint on Stone Oak Parkway, these are just a few reminders of an alleged drunk driving accident that police say killed 39-year-old Vanesa Areceli Ramos and her 5-year-old son Solumen Lopez. Police say they were in a designated crosswalk last night when investigators say 56-year-old Marlon Daniels was allegedly speeding down Stone Oak Parkway and drunk. "I wish people would just be safe around here and realize you’re not the only ones on the road,” says Leah Kvintus a Stone Oak Resident."A lot of people speed and don’t pay attention," says Kvintus. Police say Daniels took out this light pole, jumped a curb, and hit the mother and son in this crosswalk. We spoke to residents who live in this area, and they say speeding is a commonplace issue in this part of Stone Oak Parkway. Digging deeper we took a closer look at all the crashes involved on Stone Oak Parkway, and this is what we found. Over the past two years, there have been 321 crashes reported on that street alone. On this map, 8 crashes involving alcohol were reported, but only 5 are documented. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2022, 83 people were killed due to drunk drivers. Mothers Against Drunk Driving in San Antonio say drunk drivers don’t seem to be going away. " Bexar County for example we are the third highest in the state of Texas for impaired driving crashes including both injury and fatality crashes," Natalie Paulus Regional Dir. Of Victim Services of MADD San Antonio. "Drinking and driving is a choice and a very bad one," says District 9 San Antonio City Councilman John Courage. Councilman Courage says the tragedy that happened in his district is awful. He says no amount of traffic safety infrastructure will stop drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel. "I think people need to start recognizing that they owe it to the community to accept the responsibility of driving safely, acting safely when they’re away from their home,” says Councilman Courage. If you or someone you know continue to feel the impact of a drunk driving crash there is help.
