A 7-year-old service dog named Marley was stolen from her Washington Heights home but was safely returned less than 24 hours later thanks to the quick work of Chicago police officers.

A service dog that was stolen from outside a Washington Heights home last summer has been safely reunited with her family. On Aug. 9, the family of 7-year-old Marley noticed the dog was missing from their yard and immediately notified Chicago police, according to a statement from officials.Officer Kristen Fahey found out about the missing dog after surveillance video of the incident began circulating on neighborhood social media pages.

Using the footage, Fahey, along with Officer Brian Gaffney and Sgt. Vladan Milenkovic, were able to find a vehicle that was in front of the family's home at the time she was taken. In the video, a man could be seen placing Marley in the vehicle before fleeing the area. The three officers were able to track the vehicle's movements to a nearby neighborhood that Officer Javier Roman was patrolling that day and gave him its exact location. When Roman approached the residence, he saw Marley inside the home through a window. Police said the man voluntarily released the dog to the officers, and Marley was returned home that day, less than 24 hours after she was taken. The man, who has not been identified, was arrested and charged with felony theft for taking Marley
