The city of Long Beach, California, is providing funds to vulnerable families affected economically through a guaranteed income pilot program, and payments will be issued in 12 days.
The Long Beach Pledge, launched by the Long Beach Recovery Act, opened applications last year, promising $500 a month for one year to 250 families living in the city's west-central 90813 ZIP code. Payments will be sent out on the third Wednesday of the month, the Fund for Guaranteed Income told the Washington Examiner. This area was selected to receive the funds because it saw the highest need based on poverty rates and the effects of the pandemic.
Applications closed last month for the city's economic and public health initiatives program, and officials reported receiving 2,700 applicants, according to the Long Beach Post.Selected households can decide whether they want to receive their monthly payments through direct deposit, Venmo, PayPal, or via a prepaid card.
The city issued $2 million to the program, in partnership with the nonprofit organization Fund for Guaranteed Income. That separate fund had also launched a different guaranteed income program in Compton, which provided 800 families with payments between $300 and $600.
