Stewart Walz: [Jon] Huntsman cannot have it both ways, and a man with his pedigree should know better. The fact that Huntsman does not shows how far we have fallen.'
Jon Huntsman is interviewed after seeing the first returns in the GOP primary race for governor at his headquarters in Salt Lake City, on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.A few days ago, I was wondering who Jon Hunstman would support in the Utah Senate race. On October 25, I saw for the first time. In it, the former Utah governor mentions Lee’s fidelity to the Constitution.
Trump exhibited a pattern of disdain for the Constitution prior to January 6, 2021, and his disdain for it continues to this day. To be sure, anyone can disagree with parts of the Constitution as unwise or outdated. But when you raise your hand and swear to “support and defend” the supreme law of the land, you cannot pick portions to violate. Yet that is exactly what Trump did while in office and what he continues to do.
Abusing the pardon power seems to be a favorite ploy of the former president. While not unconstitutional, Trump pardoned former cohorts Michael Flynn, Roger Stone and Paul Manafort in moves that suggest he did so to remove any incentive those men would have to testify against Trump. Since that time, Trump’s continuing refusal to accept the validity of the 2020 election, and his support of election deniers, threaten the validity of future elections. It is beyond debate that the election was not stolen. Even Trump’s last Attorney General, William Barr, who tried hard to fulfill Trump’s view that the attorney general is a president’s personal lawyer, said the election valid.
