Steven Kwan, Jose Tena deliver big hits in Guardians' extra-inning win over Rays on Saturday night.
In the second, he slammed into the left field wall to rob Taylor Walls of extra bases for the third out. Kwan’s night was just getting started. Tena, meanwhile, was riding the bench.
“I really didn’t understand it,” said Kwan. “Myles was on second waving his hands trying to call time for a pinch runner . I saw Tena and I put my hand up. He called time and they conferred. “I don’t swing at the first pitch a lot of times,” said Kwan. “When you’re down 0-1, you have to simplify things. You can’t take one and get to 0-2. Anything in the zone over the plate you’ve got to swing and see what happens.”
Tena is about as raw as you can be as a rookie. He’d made his big league debut on Aug. 5 and compiled two hits and nine at-bats before returning to Class AAA Columbus in mid-August. He was recalled in the mad scramble of bodies after Cleveland claimed pitchers Matt Moore, Reynaldo Lopez and Lucas Giolito on Thursday.Manager Terry Francona almost pinch-hit David Fry, but when Naylor walked, he changed his mind.
The hit may have kept Tena in the big leagues. The Guardians activated Josh Naylor before Sunday’s game and optioned Gonzalez to Columbus. It could have easily been Tena.
