Pittsburgh Steelers guard Mason Cole is dealing with a hand injury sustained during the game against the Cincinnati Bengals. While his condition has improved, his ability to grip and control opponents will determine if he can start in the AFC Championship. If Cole's grip strength isn't sufficient, Spencer Anderson will likely take his place.
Pittsburgh Steelers guard Mason McCormick blocks during an NFL football game, Sunday, Sep. 22, 2024, in Pittsburgh. On Tuesday, McCormick talked about the injury, which he says has already improved. However, it will be about functionality when he practices to see if he can play. If his grip strength is not there, the Steelers will turn to Spencer Anderson instead. If he does play, McCormick will play with a heavily taped brace rather than a cast, which would essentially render his hand useless.
McCormick said he heard a pop when the injury occurred on the field, so he knew what had happened immediately. He hopes that does not keep him off the field, though. If he has the ability to play, he will. For the Steelers, McCormick’s level of play in practice will determine if he will be the starter.
“I don’t know, to be honest,” McCormick said. “I’m gonna go through practice this week. I’m gonna see what I can and can’t do and we’re gonna kind of take it from there.” McCormick has been the starter at right guard since Week 5 after James Daniels suffered a torn Achilles tnedon against the Indianapolis Colts. To this point, he has played well, and looks like a starter-capable player in the NFL. Yet, with the hand injury, it could potentially hold him back in the biggest game of the season., where our team of sports betting experts has reviewed the experience, payout speed, parlay options and quality of odds for multiple sportsbooks.
