They want Lobby Day for state employees to pay off with a raise that keeps up with the rising cost of living. “They say cutback. We say fight back,” chanted union members as they marched down Congress Avenue to the Texas Capitol. The message to lawmakers was clear, but to avoid any confusion, union workers spelled it out in big, bold letters.Dunn stood front and center on the South Steps of the Capitol, holding the “P” in the tall pay raise signs. She has only worked in a state lab for two years but has already considered better-paying alternatives.“There have been times when I’ve considered leaving for something that might make life a little bit easier,” said Dunn.“The number one reason people leave state employment is because of low wages,” said Ilesa Daniels Ross, President of the Texas State Employees Union. “We have so many people who leave state employment because of low wages, and it is important to have continuity in the services that we deliver to needy Texans.”“Our retirees have not had a raise since 2002,” said Ross. “It’s reduced their buying power by 40%.” This is Lobby Day for state employees and union members say they’re trying to convince legislators to give them more than money.“We are praying that today makes a difference. If we don’t fight for ourselves, nobody will. Our motto in union is if we fight, we win,” said Ross.
