State partnership frees up $10 million in ARPA money for Cuyahoga County: Stimulus Watch

The Cuyahoga County program aims to provide affordable, high-speed broadband to 25,000 households by mid-2024.

Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, who joined several Cuyahoga County officials at the press conference, said state officials consider expanding broadband to be a “very, very important topic” especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.The problem is particularly acute in Cuyahoga County, where 100,000 residents lack any form of internet access, County Executive Armond Budish said during the press conference.

The county used “temporary solutions” during the pandemic, such as providing hotspots and affordable computers. But the pandemic highlighted the need for a long-term solution, Budish said. While Cuyahoga County’s portion of the broadband expansion funding comes from ARPA funding, the state money is coming from Ohio’s general fund, Husted said.

This is far from the only recent state or local investment in expanding broadband. State lawmakers approved earlier this year
